Official statement from the CEO and publisher of The Nurses Magazine for Nurses Week

Beyond Nurses Week, emphasizing the importance of elevating nursing as a profession every day.

Every year, Nurses Week provides an opportunity to celebrate, thank, and honor one of the most trusted and essential professions. Across hospitals, clinics, classrooms, and communities, nurses are recognized through gestures such as luncheons, small gifts, recognition events, and acknowledgments that say, “We see you.”

And truly, nurses do appreciate it.

After long shifts filled with emotional demands and continuous caregiving, these small gestures carry great importance. A warm meal, a handwritten note, or a simple thank you can genuinely uplift a nurse beyond what words can express. Nurses Week provides a moment for organizations and communities to pause and celebrate those who often put others’ needs before their own.

But even though Nurses Week is meaningful, it also raises an important truth:

Nurses deserve appreciation that extends far beyond just one week.

Nursing is a lifelong calling rather than a seasonal task. Throughout the year, nurses are active in various settings, at bedsides, in boardrooms, classrooms, and communities. They advocate for patients, promote healthcare innovation, educate future professionals, and step up during crises. Their presence is felt on holidays, in natural disasters, and in quiet moments when few are paying attention.

Recognition, therefore, should not be limited to one designated week on the calendar. Recognize that nursing is a profession.

True appreciation for nurses is reflected in the support they receive year-round.

In safe staffing and manageable workloads.

In fair compensation and professional growth opportunities.

In mental health support and workplace respect.

In leadership opportunities and decision-making roles.

In a culture that values their voice every single day.

Although celebratory gifts and themed events are valued, nurses desire something more meaningful: continuous respect, sincere support, and consistent acknowledgment of their efforts.

We also need to confront a critical issue affecting the profession: violence against nurses by patients in the workplace. No nurse should fear for their safety when arriving at work. Healthcare settings should facilitate healing, not create dangers. Addressing workplace violence requires establishing stronger policies, holding institutions accountable, ensuring adequate staffing, and cultivating a culture that protects and supports nurses during incidents. Safety is essential; it is vital for preserving the integrity of the profession and the well-being of healthcare workers.

At The Nurses Magazine, we believe appreciation should extend beyond just one week. Our goal is to amplify the voices, leadership, and influence of nurses throughout the year by sharing their stories, supporting their progress, and providing platforms where nurses are recognized, listened to, and appreciated across the profession.

We must ensure that our elected officials recognize that nursing is more than just a job. It is a profession grounded in science, leadership, critical thinking, and compassion. Policies related to healthcare, education funding, and workforce development should acknowledge the significance, expertise, and authority of nurses. Advocacy is vital for securing appropriate representation, support, and empowerment for nurses at all levels of decision-making.

Nurses Week should not be the sole time to show appreciation. Instead, it should be a reminder and a starting point for how we care for, support, and honor nurses throughout the year.

As Nurses Week begins, let’s go beyond just celebrating and truly appreciate nurses year-round. Our aim should be to develop systems and cultures that acknowledge and value their efforts, not only in May but every day, during each shift, and every moment they devote to caring for others.

Because the truth is simple

Because the truth is simple—

One week of appreciation is nice.

A lifetime of respect is necessary.
