Advancing Equity and Diversity: A Pivotal Moment for Men’s Health Nursing and the Profession’s Future

Statement by Dr. Donel J. Richemond, President & Founder of The Nurses Magazine.

The American Nurses Association’s recognition of Men’s Health Nursing as a formal specialty in 2026 marks a significant, long-overdue milestone for our profession. It highlights the growing acknowledgment that boys’ and men’s health needs require dedicated, culturally sensitive, and specialized nursing care throughout their lives.

Although this milestone has not received significant attention in mainstream media, we at The Nurses Magazine believe it is both important and essential to highlight. During Nurses Week, we aim to recognize, promote, and better understand this advancement and its significance in shaping the future of nursing and health equity.

For too long, gaps in access, engagement, and outcomes have undermined men’s health, making intentional solutions necessary. By formally recognizing this specialty, the profession is taking a meaningful step toward addressing those disparities and advancing true health equity. It affirms what many nurses have already been doing: leading, advocating, and innovating in spaces that support the physical, mental, and social well-being of men and boys.

We also want to recognize the vital contributions of the American Association for Men in Nursing. Their leadership and advocacy have played a key role in this initiative, and their dedication to promoting men in nursing and improving men’s health outcomes has helped elevate this recognition within the profession.

At The Nurses Magazine, we view this moment not only as a recognition but also as a call to action. It is an opportunity to amplify the voices of nurses leading change in men’s health, invest in education and workforce development, and inspire the next generation of nurses, especially men, to pursue leadership and service with confidence.

Diversity in nursing plays a critical role in advancing this progress. A more inclusive and representative nursing workforce enables us to understand better, connect with, and serve the communities that rely on us. Highlighting the presence of men in nursing, while also acknowledging the contributions of nurses from all backgrounds, strengthens the profession and challenges outdated stereotypes about nurses’ identities and leadership roles.

During Nurses Week, we proudly spotlight this significant milestone and the collaboration that made it possible. Initiatives such as Men of Honor: Honoring the Most Impactful Men in Nursing™ demonstrate our commitment to celebrating those who are shaping the future of nursing and ensuring the profession continues to serve all communities effectively.

And as we look ahead—

This is progress.

This is the purpose.

And this is the future of nursing.
