The Nurse Executives Shaping American Healthcare

Becker's Hospital Review has named its 2026 Hospital and Health System CNOs to Know. Here is what the list reveals about where nursing leadership is headed, followed by the full roster of honorees.

Every hospital runs on nursing, and every nursing team takes its direction from the top. The Chief Nursing Officer sets the strategy that determines how many nurses are on a unit, how they are trained, how safely patients are cared for, and whether talented clinicians choose to stay.

On October 30, 2026, Becker's Hospital Review published its annual list of Hospital and Health System CNOs to Know, profiling 363 nurse executives from health systems across the country. The honorees were selected through nominations and editorial research, and Becker's notes that leaders do not, and cannot, pay for inclusion.

For The Nurses Magazine®, the list is more than a roster. Our editorial team reviewed all 363 published profiles to understand what today's nurse executives are working on. Read together, they describe the state of nursing leadership in 2026: the pressures these leaders face, the solutions they are building and the standard they are setting for the profession.

Why the Chief Nursing Officer Matters More Than Ever

The modern CNO is no longer only the senior nurse in the building. Today's nurse executives are responsible for nursing strategy, workforce planning, multimillion-dollar budgets and the professional development pathways that bring nurses in and keep them. Their decisions shape quality and clinical outcomes across entire organizations, well beyond the nursing department.

That responsibility has grown as health systems have expanded. On this year's list, 89 honorees hold titles at the system, regional, market or enterprise level, coordinating nursing practice across multiple hospitals and, in many cases, thousands of clinicians at once.

Strong nursing leadership is strong healthcare leadership. The data on staffing, safety and retention makes that case every day.

Six Priorities That Define Today's Nurse Executive

The Nurses Magazine® analyzed all 363 honoree profiles for recurring themes. Six emerged. Together, they form a practical agenda for nursing leadership in 2026, ranked here by how often they appear.

01

Workforce Stability

Recruitment, retention, nurse residency programs and a deliberate shift away from reliance on agency and travel staffing.

56% of profiles · 203 of 363
02

Professional Practice

Magnet® and Pathway to Excellence® designations, shared governance and clinical ladders that give nurses a voice and a future.

40% of profiles · 147 of 363
03

Patient Safety & Quality

Measurable gains on falls, hospital-acquired pressure injuries, infections and sepsis outcomes.

39% of profiles · 141 of 363
04

Leadership Development

Leadership academies, mentorship and succession planning that grow the next generation of nurse executives.

17% of profiles · 63 of 363
05

Technology & Less Burden

Digital tools, EHR optimization and AI that reduce documentation burden so nurses can focus on patients.

12% of profiles · 45 of 363
06

Care Model Innovation

Virtual nursing, telehealth and redesigned team models that extend expert support to every bedside.

10% of profiles · 35 of 363

The Workforce Equation

Workforce stability is the single most common theme on this year's list, appearing in 56% of honoree profiles, and the numbers explain why. The 2026 NSI National Health Care Retention & RN Staffing Report, which covers hospital data from 2025, shows how much is at stake:

17.6%Hospital RN turnover rate in 2025
8.6%RN vacancy rate
$60,090Average cost to replace one bedside RN
$295KAnnual impact of each 1% change in RN turnover for the average hospital

Nurse leaders see the same reality from the inside. The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), in its latest Nursing Leadership Insight Study conducted with Chartis, surveyed 1,338 nurse leaders across 430 hospitals and 210 health systems. It found that staffing remains the top priority for nurse leaders by a wide margin.

That is why so many of this year's honorees are recognized for measurable progress on retention, nurse residency programs and reduced dependence on contract labor. Each percentage point of turnover avoided is both a financial result and a sign of a healthier workplace for nurses.

What It Means for the Next Generation of Nurse Leaders

For nurses who aspire to executive leadership, the 2026 list offers a clear picture of the path. Advanced education is common: 147 honorees, about 40% of the list, include a doctoral degree among their published credentials, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice is the most frequent, held by 117. Because 76 profiles list no credentials at all, the true share is likely higher.

Experience matters as much as education. Dozens of profiles describe careers that began at the bedside as staff nurses, then advanced through charge nurse, manager and director roles before reaching the executive suite.

Just as important, the profiles show that executive nursing leadership is measured by results: safer patients, stronger teams and nurses who choose to stay. Those outcomes are within reach of every nurse leader, at every level.

The Nurses Magazine® congratulates every honoree and thanks them for leading with vision, integrity and care.
